Headline guidance
- Barcelona is “easily worth two days” and rewards a third or more (source: Barcelona Itinerary Planning Your Time.md).
- Many top sights close Monday, which makes them crowded on Tuesday and Sunday (source: same).
- Buy advance tickets for sagrada-familia and la-pedrera — both have long lines (source: same). See tickets-and-reservations and closures-and-monday-problem.
Day plans
Barcelona in one day
A scramble. Suggested cadence:
- 9:00 barri-gotic walk + barcelona-cathedral
- 11:00 ramblas down to the harbor
- 12:30 Lunch in el-born
- 14:00 picasso-museum
- 16:00 sagrada-familia
- 18:00 eixample for Gaudí exteriors (la-pedrera, casa-batllo)
- 19:00 Evening paseo and tapas in the Barri Gòtic
For a relaxed single day, drop the cathedral and Eixample-exterior leg.
Two or more days — divide geographically
- Day 1 (Old City): Barri Gòtic + cathedral, Ramblas, Palau de la Música (palace-of-catalan-music, reservation required), El Born, Picasso Museum.
- Day 2 (Modernisme): eixample walk, la-pedrera and/or casa-batllo, sagrada-familia, then park-guell or montjuic.
- Day 3 (montjuic + barceloneta): Fundació Joan Miró, catalan-art-museum, CaixaForum; cable car down to the beach.
- Day 4: Day trip — see day-trips-from-barcelona.
Connecting Barcelona to the rest of Spain
- AVE high-speed train to Madrid is 3 hours, “faster and more comfortable than flying” (source: same).
- Barcelona works well as the first or last stop on a Spain trip; flights from the US are as easy as into Madrid.
- A common cost-saver: sightsee Barcelona + Madrid + Toledo before picking up any rental car, to avoid paying rental fees during city days.
